Queen Victoria was the first royal bride of the Windsor Line, though they did not take the title Windsor until her son was King in World War I. The marriage of Queen Victoria to Albert, Prince of Saxe-Coburg Gotha was a happy and loving one. After his death she never ceased to mourn for him until her own death in 1901.

Queen Victoria's son Bertie was a bit too wild and not serious enough for her taste. So she set her ministers to finding him a wife that could settle him down a bit. They chose the daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark. The Danish royals were not as wealthy as the British and lived fairly normal lives. When Bertie married his "Alix", the marriage, though not a faithful one of the part of Bertie, was a sucessful one and they did love one another. Edward is famous for his affair with Alice Keppel, the Great Great Grandmother of Mrs. Camilla Parker Bowles Windsor, Duchess of Cornwall, wife and former mistress of the present Prince of Wales, most famous for destroying his marriage to Princess Diana.

In 1891, Princess May was engaged to Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, the eldest son of Prince Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. Princess May was chosen as a bride for Albert Victor, due mainly to Queen Victoria's fondness of her, as well as her strong character and sense of duty. Albert Victor was Princess May's second cousin once removed; May was the daughter of Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, whose father, Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, was a brother of Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent, the father of Queen Victoria, who was Albert Victor's grandmother. However, Prince Albert Victor died of pneumonia six weeks later.

Despite this setback, Queen Victoria still favoured Princess May as a suitable candidate to marry a future King, so she persuaded Albert Victor's brother, Prince George, Duke of York, to propose to May. George duly proposed and May accepted. Despite its being an arranged marriage, May and George soon were deeply in love. George never took a mistress and wrote to May every day.
